Rice University School of Engineering Dean Search

 

Rice University seeks an accomplished leader to become the next Dean of the George R. Brown School of Engineering. This individual will have the vision to build upon and enhance the school’s existing strengths and develop new opportunities for the school, leading it into the future in the rapidly evolving worlds of engineering research and higher education. The future Dean must have a proven track record of success as a department head, dean, director of a research center, or similar leadership role.

The Dean will work with the faculty of the school to articulate a vision of the school and work with the Provost and President of the University to implement that vision. This will require actively participating in the fundraising efforts of school, the recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty, strengthening undergraduate and graduate educational programs, and creating a research environment that supports the creativity and innovation of faculty. The Dean will work with the deans of other schools at Rice (especially the Dean of Natural Sciences) to foster collaboration among the schools and thereby play an important role in the growth and advancement of the University. The Dean also has responsibility for the School’s programs and budgets, review of faculty appointments, and administration and development of financial support.

In the recently released 2017 U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges rankings, Rice is ranked 15th in the country and its undergraduate engineering program is ranked 18th. Located in Houston, the nation’s 4th largest city, the School comprises nine academic departments: Bioengineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computational and Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Science and NanoEngineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Statistics. The Brown School also engages more than seventeen research centers and institutes and utilizes shared equipment facilities that build on its exceptionally close interactions with the Wiess School of Natural Sciences, other academic schools at Rice, and institutions in the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world.

Nominations and expressions of interest will be accepted until a select list of candidates is put forward for final consideration by the Provost and President. The Search Committee will initiate confidential screening of candidates upon receipt of information. It is expected that the successful candidate will assume the position July 1, 2017.
